Kevin Wilson's characters inhabit a world that moves seamlessly between the real and the imagined, the mundane and the fantastic. "Grand Stand-In" is narrated by an employee of a Nuclear Family Supplemental Provider--a company that supplies "stand-ins" for families with deceased, ill, or just plain mean grandparents. And in "Blowing Up On the Spot," a young woman works sorting tiles at a Scrabble factory after her parents have spontaneously combusted.

Southern gothic at its best, laced with humor and pathos, these wonderfully inventive stories explore the relationship between loss and death and the many ways we try to cope with both.

Whip smart and beautifully written, Tunneling to the Center of the Earth is a short story collection that will change your mind about reading short stories.

Creative, insightful, absorbing, and always a bit weird, this is the coolest collection of short stories told with unique style and truly memorable imagery, characters, and scenarios. There’s something in each story that you’ve never thought about before.

Quirky and worth working through. Not what I expected.

I thought this collection of short stories was great with lots of unique characters. My favorites were "Grand Stand-In", "the dead sister handbook: a guide for sensitive boys" and "Mortal Kombat". Even with some of the implausible elements in a few of the stories you still feel connected with the characters. A great read for lovers of short stories. I read this for book club definitely a discussion starter.
