The well-researched Ibis Trilogy, starting with "Sea of Poppies," does an amazing job of telling the story of the Opium Wars through captivating fiction. The multiple narrators bring this very real and important part of history to life in a way that only the best historical fiction can.

Love this author. Have read several of this books. Sea of Poppies is my favorite so far. I first read this book several years ago. I recently listened to this audiobook and had the joy of getting to know the characters all over again. I agree that the reader did a good job with all the complex dialects. On to River of Smoke next!

NY Times Book Review, 10/2011, recommended. River of Smoke is his new book, a sequel.

I liked this reader and he did a good job on the accents as far as I could tell, with the exception of French. Now that I see that the book form has a glossary I wish I had started with that. It's a great story and I'm looking forward to volume 2 in the trilogy, which comes out in the fall of 2011.
