The inimitable William Trevor returns with a story of suspicion, guilt, forbidden love and the possibility of starting over.

It's summer, and nothing much is happening in Rathmoye. So it doesn't go unnoticed when a dark-haired stranger begins photographing the mourners at Mrs. Connulty's funeral. Florian Kilderry couldn't know that the Connultys were said to own half the town. But Miss Connulty resolves to keep an eye on Florian … and she becomes a witness to the ensuing events. In a characteristically masterful way, Trevor evokes the passions and frustrations in an Irish town during one long summer.

"Love and Summer was the fifth of the Irish author's novels to be nominated for the Booker Prize; The New York Times calls it a "work of art."" Fiction A to Z December 2012 newsletter http://www.nextreads.com/Display2.aspx?SID=5acc8fc1-4e91-4ebe-906d-f8fc5e82a8e0&N=580458

An old-fashioned, sweet Irish story, set in the 1950s.

A beautiful small novel, that is a real gem. It is about a secret summer romance in a small Irish village and the people that are involved and changed as a result. I highly, highly recommend.

Small towns and circumscribed lives are this book subjects, the setting Ireland sometime mid century. Ellie and Florian are the central characters, but Trevor writes in a whole town of people with unrealized hopes and dreams.

Trevor is a master storyteller; this one is no different than all the wonderful ones read before. The book is a quiet little gem; great for a reading moment in summer.

It's amazing how much of the human condition is revealed with so few words. Booker Prize Longlist 2009
