"Love and Summer was the fifth of the Irish author's novels to be nominated for the Booker Prize; The New York Times calls it a "work of art."" Fiction A to Z December 2012 newsletter http://www.nextreads.com/Display2.aspx?SID=5acc8fc1-4e91-4ebe-906d-f8fc5e82a8e0&N=580458
An old-fashioned, sweet Irish story, set in the 1950s.
A beautiful small novel, that is a real gem. It is about a secret summer romance in a small Irish village and the people that are involved and changed as a result. I highly, highly recommend.
What a sad , sweet tale - I loved it ! William Trevor , you are a master , and to think you published this at age 81 !
Small towns and circumscribed lives are this book subjects, the setting Ireland sometime mid century. Ellie and Florian are the central characters, but Trevor writes in a whole town of people with unrealized hopes and dreams.
Trevor is a master storyteller; this one is no different than all the wonderful ones read before. The book is a quiet little gem; great for a reading moment in summer.
It's amazing how much of the human condition is revealed with so few words. Booker Prize Longlist 2009
