Fred Eppinger knew The Hanover Group was in trouble when he accepted the role of CEO. The company had deep financial problems, the board wanted to see positive change, and the clock was ticking. Eppinger woke up very early to begin his first day on the job.
'I got to work about 6.00 A.M.,' he says, 'and the only way into the building at that time was through the back door of the cafeteria. As I walked through the kitchen I said to one of the staff, 'As ling as you've got coffee brewing, may I have a cup?' She looked me up and down and said, 'Fine, but who are you?'
'I told her I'd just been hired, that it was my first day, and that I wanted to and early start and make a good impression.'
As she reached for the carafe of fresh coffee, the woman asked what job he'd been hired to do. When he said that he was the new CEO, she almost dropped the pot. 'I've been here fourteen years,' she exclaimed, 'and we've never seen any of the big-wigs down here before!'
Eppinger's next question must have been just as shocking. He asked if she'd mind sitting down and spending some time telling him about the company. It was the beginning of Eppinger's most important mission. He was going to enlist his employees, one person at a time, in turning around the company.
