An Emma Lord Mystery

The twenty-first installment of Mary Daheim's series featuring Emma Lord proves once again that life in the peaceful town of Alpine is anything but In Emma Lord's newest outing, a fight erupts at the local tavern, and a patron is murdered with a pool cue. What initially seems to be an open-and-shut case disintegrates into the contradictory and confused recountings of the murder's many witnesses. Each one has an agenda behind the story--some of them committed enough to lie. And it's up to Emma Lord and her longtime compatriot, Sherriff Milo Dodge, to figure it out.

I was about to give up on this series, but now I will be able to finish. Emma finally admits that she has spent her whole adult life believing in the fairy tale of Tom (the father of her son). I was so sick of it I had sworn off the last few books. These do need to be read in order or you'll be lost with all the characters. Another death in the local low-class tavern--but this one was witnessed by so many people that it has to be open and shut, right? It is until Emma starts asking questions. But she gets distracted by Milo's reconciliation with Old Mulehide.

I picked this book off the shelf not knowing what to expect. I can't keep track of all the characters (and I'm in the first chapter). I think this is a book for another time.
