"You was settin on the street when I seen you, and you was hungry. I fed you. Figgered a boy needed schoolin, so I sent you. Ever year I paid. You are old enough to make out. I got nothing more for you." The boy was left on the street, no money, no food, no home. The boy had one friend, then, one night at the Crossing, a group of cowpunchers from the Three-X killed his friend. But no one had figured on the kid, by the time the lights were out, the kid had emptied his guns, and some of the cowpunchers were dead. The kid went East, grew into an astute business man, and married a near-do-well out for an easy buck. She cheated him, betrayed him, and tried to have him killed, but since she never really knew the kid: she failed. It is here that the story of Flint begins. This a book for anyone who believes in responsibility, education, wisdom, growing up, citizenship, and building a future.

Flint led Nancy to talking of the ranch, and learned the whole story of her efforts to improve it. He was surprised by her appreciation of the grazing problem, and what she had done about it. One of her hands had been a German who remained at the ranch an entire summer making repairs in the house, building cabinets and furniture. He had told her about grazing methods in Germany and Switzerland, and from him she learned the use of spreader dams, dams built to spread the runoff from hillsides instead of letting it trickle away. Wells had been dug, seeps cleaned out, herds trimmed to avoid overgrazing.
