From the #1 internationally bestselling author of The House at Riverton , a novel that takes the reader on an unforgettable journey through generations and across continents as two women try to uncover their family's secret past.

A tiny girl is abandoned on a ship headed for Australia in 1913. She arrives completely alone with nothing but a small suitcase containing a few clothes and a single book--a beautiful volume of fairy tales. She is taken in by the dockmaster and his wife and raised as their own. On her twenty-fi rst birthday, they tell her the truth, and with her sense of self shattered and very little to go on, "Nell" sets out to trace her real identity. Her quest leads her to Blackhurst Manor on the Cornish coast and the secrets of the doomed Mountrachet family. But it is not until her granddaughter, Cassandra, takes up the search after Nell's death that all the pieces of the puzzle are assembled. A spellbinding tale of mystery and self-discovery, The Forgotten Garden will take hold of your imagination and never let go.

Trying not to give the story away I can only say that I was very surprised that the little girl's companion would leave her unsupervised on the ship after all the grief she went to in order for them to be together.

A tiny girl is on a ship that docks in Australia. She is alone, and doesn't know her name or why she left England.

A beautifully written novel combining a mix of history, mystery and fairy-tale.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book by Kate Morton. Found it so mesmerizing and could not put it down. The characters quite literally come alive and follow their own pathway. I could read it again and it reminded me of my growing up years when I enjoyed Little Women so very much. I would highly recommend it.

My favorite Kate Morton novel. I loved the history, the mystery, the family drama, the gothic overtones, and I was especially enchanted by her writing.

Fun, sudsy-soapy family mystery. Elements of classic 'romance' novels abound: the Big Stately Home owned by the Monied Family with Secrets, the troubled daughter(s) of the house, the might-be-a-bad-guy son of the house, the beautiful orphan, mysterious pregnancies and births, close-mouthed villagers. The book jumps around, a bit too often for me, between the late 1800s and early 1900s, the mid-1970s and the early 2000s. It's an enjoyable light read. I did have the Big Mystery figured out about halfway through and it was not totally plausible that Cassandra didn't cop on as well.

Morton sure does weave an intricate tale with steady slow drips of clues and misdirection. I didn't fall for the misdirection in this one though and had it sorted sooner than I did her other books.
