Finally, after four hit novels, Carrie Fisher comes clean (well, sort of ) with the crazy truth that is her life in her first-ever memoir.

In Wishful Drinking , adapted from her one-woman stage show, Fisher reveals what it was really like to grow up a product of "Hollywood in-breeding," come of age on the set of a little movie called Star Wars, and become a cultural icon and bestselling action figure at the age of nineteen.

Intimate, hilarious, and sobering, Wishful Drinking is Fisher, looking at her life as she best remembers it (what do you expect after electroshock therapy?). It's an incredible tale: the child of Hollywood royalty -- Debbie Reynolds and Eddie Fisher -- homewrecked by Elizabeth Taylor, marrying (then divorcing, then dating) Paul Simon, having her likeness merchandized on everything from Princess Leia shampoo to PEZ dispensers, learning the father of her daughter forgot to tell her he was gay, and ultimately waking up one morning and finding a friend dead beside her in bed.

Wishful Drinking , the show, has been a runaway success. Entertainment Weekly declared it "drolly hysterical" and the Los Angeles Times called it a "Beverly Hills yard sale of juicy anecdotes." This is Carrie Fisher at her best -- revealing her worst. She tells her true and outrageous story of her bizarre reality with her inimitable wit, unabashed self-deprecation, and buoyant, infectious humor.

HILARIOUS! Lovely insights into Carrie Fisher's mind and life. Couldn't put the book down, and read it in about one day. Highly recommend for Star Wars geeks, and for those who are interested in her mother's (Debbie Reynolds) life as well.

Honest portrayal of Fisher's life that is both funny and sad. A quick read that is told in a sarcastic voice some would call witty.

I am not sure if Carrie wrote this book before she wrote & performed her stage performance, but I had seen the performance long before I read the book and they are the same. I am happy that Ms. Fisher was able to obtain a level of peace with her complex and chaotic life, I didn't find it particularly entertaining. I felt like a voyeur or someone who listened at keyholes. this had none of the wit and sparkle of her novels and I would not recommend this book to readers looking for Ms. Fisher's usual brand of comic talent.

Carrie is truthful and adds great humor to her live. I loved this book, and couldn't put it down. I read it in one day.

Witty, poignant, and full of humor, Carries Fisher offers an inside look at some of the more intimate stories and experiences of her life, all framed with her own kind of sense of humor. I can safely say that after reading this book, I immediately had to find her other work "The Princess Diarist" as well as her novel "Postcards from the Edge". Needless to say, I am a HUGE fan of Ms. Fisher's work, and my love and appreciation of it has grown greatly. If you are looking for a funny, yet in my opinion thought-provoking, quick read--then this is a certainly a must!

This book may not be for everyone; but Carrie Fisher is nothing less than her honest, raw self. Her life wasn't pretty; and she tells you about it. Her honesty about her issues, addiction, mental health and ugly aspects of her life is refreshing. Very quick read.

Wishful Drinking was pretty easy to read. It took me five days to read this book. Carrie Fisher will be forever known in the public eye as Princess Leia from Star Wars. But, this is a memoir and when a memoir is written, not everything that goes in their lives will be revealed. However, she provides insight on what life was like for her being the daughter of an actress and a singer and of the struggles she had to go through dealing with her illness. What surprised me the most was when she found out a facial picture of her (as Princess Leia) was placed in a magazine that describes her illness.

For me, Carrie Fisher has always been a huge role model in my life and reading about how she struggled with mental illness and addiction really put into perspective that she was just as much human as I am. Carrie Fisher has an amazing voice and if you haven't read a autobiography before this would be a great starting point.

A sense of humour can go a long way and Carrie Fisher has it in spades. She opens with a death, by her own admission to get the heavy stuff out of the way quickly, and that is handled with a wonderful helping of gallows humour and dry humour both. If you find laughing at not funny things a hard thing to do you will either hate this for that or learn the skill. I have no problem with such things but even so I was still smiling and laughing out loud and burned through the book in one sitting. As much as you are laughing, and she does want you to, there is a bit of a sting there are you think about what her rehab stays, drug and alcoholism, and the diagnosis of bipolar disorder, would have felt like at the time. Also the toll that ECT has had on her memory.

Leia is the least of her problems, and she covers them all! From Hollywood inbreeding to electroshock therapy, she has little reservation about what she covers and proves that she really does "think in her mouth". I have a new-found respect for her.
