The description of the film above summarizes it well enough. It seems to work better as a documentary, though. The relationship is a bit theatrical for me, especially at the level of the dialogue. The characters talk about love as if they were reading from a textbook, even though they're dealing in a real-life situation. Maybe there are people who talk this way but the result is that the link between the two aspects of life in La Pointe Courte aren't unified in a satisfying package. Ultimately this became a half-interesting film that should have been a story of a fishing village and its hard-working people. There is a wealth of story potential in the lives of the villagers; the two protagonists could've worked out their problems at another time and place. This is a first film for Varda and an admirable debut but may not be the best starting point for those interested in her work.
