Emmy was a good girl. At least she tried very hard to be good. She did her homework without being told. She ate all her vegetables, even the slimy ones. And she never talked back to her nanny, Miss Barmy, although it was almost impossible to keep quiet, some days.

She really was a little too good. Which is why she liked to sit by the Rat. The Rat was not good at all . . .

Hilarious, inventive, and irresistably rodent-friendly, Emmy and the Incredible Shrinking Rat is a fantastic first novel from acclaimed picture book author Lynne Jonell.

I found this one while roaming the library, and since I had enjoyed it a couple years ago, got it again. It is super cute and doesn't follow a lot of clich├ęs of children's fiction. Emmy and Joe are friends, without anything else to ruin the story. The Rat is hilarious, and really sweet at heart. I would recommend this to anyone 8 and over. Nothing objectionable whatsoever.

Emmy is a girl that hardly anyone takes the time to notice, including her parents who take long trips away from their home. In school, Emmy is almost invisible to everyone except for the class pet, Rat. When Emmy discovers that Rat can talk and frees him from his cage, she sets off a chain of events that leads to the discovery of just how evil her nanny is.

This book was one of my favorites by far but took quite some time to get into the action of the story plot. If you tend to be someone who is seeking high action books, wait the beginning of this one out and you'll find that it was well worth it.
