A bright, science-minded boy goes to the beach equipped to collect and examine flotsam--anything floating that has been washed ashore. Bottles, lost toys, small objects of every description are among his usual finds. But there's no way he could have prepared for one particular discovery: a barnacle-encrusted underwater camera, with its own secrets to share . . . and to keep.

Each of David Wiesner's amazing picture books has revealed the magical possibilities of some ordinary thing or happening--a frog on a lily pad, a trip to the Empire State Building, a well-known nursery tale. In this Caldecott Medal winner, a day at the beach is the springboard into a wildly imaginative exploration of the mysteries of the deep, and of the qualities that enable us to witness these wonders and delight in them.

This is not an easy read, even though it has no words, because the ending may need a little help from an adult to interpret. It reads like a graphic novel or comic, so young children may need a little help getting the story in sequence. Very innovative and beautifully illustrated.

Wonderful art and story. The pictures inside the pictures and the lives of the creatures in the sea are delightful surprises. No words. The pictures tell the tale.

One of my favorite children's books ever. Adult will get even more from it!

Mr. Wiesner’s wordless picture books are absolute treasures and "Flotsam” is no exception. Through whimsical images, the underwater kingdom is brought to life with sea creatures going about their mundane business. But their lives are filled with things and habits we don’t associate with marine beasts at all. The ordinary is made extraordinary by taking the familiar and turning it topsy turvy. Enormous starfish carry islands on their backs; octopi read books to rows of avidly attentive fish; puffer fish float through the air like balloons. These are the kinds of pictures you scan over and over again, searching out any detail that you might have missed. Children will simply adore its vivid illustrations and enchanting story.

Another amazing wordless picture book! This book was even better than Sector 7! The illustrations were so rich and interesting that I could look at them again and again and see new things. The story concept was very creative about a boy who finds an underwater camera at the beach. He develops the pictures and finds some very unusual and unexpected things!
I think there is something for every age group to be found in this book. Cute pictures for younger kids and more mature concepts for the older kids.
Would I recommend this book? YES. For all age groups.

I was confused at first but, honestly David Wiesner really put a creative writing streak on (even if there are no words)!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

As a writer (not illustrator) I generally put these books back on the shelves when I see there is no "story" -- that is, written words. But I was intrigued by the first few pages of this one -- and what a story the images told! Very impressive. I handed it to my daughter who wouldn't even go past page one (she prefers words). Her loss.

This is a beautiful wordless picture book. It is filled with wonderful illustrations full of detail. It tells a lovely story and would be a great book to use to cuddle up with your toddler and talk about. Highly recomended.
