Good idea, imperfect execution. The objective is to give viewers a sense of what the lifestyle of a typical urban middle class family would have been in 1900, and how it differs from modern times. How would a person's day-to-day life be affected without the benefit of indoor toilets, electricity, telephones, washing machines, dishwashers, gas or electric cooking stoves? The problem is that the family members chosen for the assignment were overly-dramatic, and didn't have time to get accustomed to the different lifestyle before the filming started. Various technical problems prevented them from getting a smooth start -- stuff that an actual 1900 family would have already solved. So what we see is mostly the learning curve adjustment period, rather than what the typical lifestyle would have been.

Saw this years ago...still good. To anyone reading this, the DVD is horribly scratched up, and skips or freezes up. I am returning it today,[April18th 2013] I will tell the librarians, as I do not want o be blamed for the damage. It should be replaced, as I see there are 45 holds and just one copy. I put a hold on it in July 2011, yikes, just shy of 2 years.

Awesome! I have now watched every other PBS DVD like it!

Well thought out premise on behalf of the creators. The first disc is mainly a set up for the project, as to how they redo the 1900 house to take it back to the way it would have been. Slightly arduous to watch the family plodding through the series.
