I read this book because it was on the World War I reading list from the library. Actually, I didn’t read it, I listened to it. I think that made a 3 Star book into a 4 Star book. I loved the accents & voice inflections used by reader John Slattery. I wasn’t expecting so much humor! Let’s face it, there is very little humor in the average WWI novel. I haven’t read anything else that dealt with the war in Italy. I would have liked more between the soldiers & less of the romance, but I understand that isn’t the point of the novel.
I didn’t like the “romance” of the novel at all. If this is the average man’s view of romance, then I understand why the divorce rate is so high. I can’t imagine so much inane conversation with any boyfriend! I would rather read a book any day. I honestly couldn’t figure out what either of these people saw in each other.
Now a word of warning. I also had a printed copy of the book with 3 introductions & made the mistake of reading them before the book, since I thought that was the purpose of an introduction. Big mistake. The one written by his son (or grandson?) told me everything that was going to happen in the book. Since there isn’t really all that much that happens in the book, I was more than a little bit annoyed. I only bothered to read the book after that because I was interested in the WWI aspect. They should have a spoiler alert on them or put them at the back of the book!

Classic. Had not read it since high school. I think I appreciate Hemingway's writing more as an adult than I did as a high school student.

This is my first Hemingway book... At first I found it a little boring and had to get used to the style it was written in. But after a while, I started to enjoy the quirky and repetitive dialogues. I am glad I stuck to the end, as I got to enjoy reading each page. The ending was unexpected, but it didn't shock me as I figured mid-book that Hemingway wasn't an ordinary author.
