This is an underrated gem of a movie. The cast is a virtual 'old Hollywood' (Edward G. Robinson, Joan Blondell) meets 'new Hollywood' (Steve McQueen, Ann Margaret, Tuesday Weld, Rip Torn) and somewhere in between (Karl Malden, Jack Weston). The story is simple, a young poker expert's life leading up to meeting the old professional, culminating in the big game at the end. The performances are first rate, very natural and the on location setting of New Orleans gives it such an authentic feel. If I have a criticism it's that the film is set in the '30's but the younger cast members look very much of their time, the swinging '60's. Enjoy.

A good film which is a bit slow at times. I liked the realism in the film.
