This irresistible first novel tells the story of a quiet boy who embarks on a dangerous quest in order to fulfill his destiny -- and find his father -- in a strange world beneath New York City.

When Gregor falls through a grate in the laundry room of his apartment building, he hurtles into the dark Underland, where spiders, rats, cockroaches coexist uneasily with humans. This world is on the brink of war, and Gregor's arrival is no accident. A prophecy foretells that Gregor has a role to play in the Underland's uncertain future. Gregor wants no part of it -- until he realizes it's the only way to solve the mystery of his father's disappearance. Reluctantly, Gregor embarks on a dangerous adventure that will change both him and the Underland forever.

Being sucked down into the earth and making friends with giant roaches and bats while fighting giant rats and rescuing your long lost father all the while taking care of your baby sister what's not to love?

I read this to get away from the heavier fare I've been reading; it seems like lately I've read a lot of stuff that was hitting me hard emotionally or taxing my brain cells, and I needed a little break. And this book was light enough to give the break, while still having enough action and a strong enough plot to keep my interest.
The "questers" (Gregor's word) in this story reminded me of the Fellowship of the Ring in the Lord of the Rings - the group is made up of representatives from different races (or species), and there is mistrust (and some superiority) between members of the different groups. Collins does a good job of showing the different "personalities" of the different types of animals, while giving each of the separate members of those groups some individuality as well. I hope, in the next few volumes, she gives us a better layout of the geography of the Underland itself. (And yes, I do plan on reading more of this series!)

When he fell down the hole, I thought he was going to die. I liked it when he found his dad. He was so sweet. Review by Tehya Wiersma.

One of the few series that gets better with each book. I adore the audio version for family road trips. This book was written for kids as young as 7 years old by the author of the Hunger Games so you know you are in for a great adventure!

Easily one of my top picks to recommend for reluctant readers.

This is one of my all-time favorite series, and the excitement only becomes greater as the story unfolds! The only issue I have is the ending of the series, not what I had in mind. You will absolutely LOVE this book!

The reason I read this book was because I LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE!!!!!!!!!! The Hunger Games. And I know Suzanne Collins wrote this series before The Hunger Games series. I was happily impressed! The plot was so interesting. Like a modern, New York version of "Alice in Wonderland" but trust me, there a no tea parties or Mad Hatters. :)

Gregor and his two-year-old sister, Boots, fell through a... hole (?) and into the secret (kinda) underground world called the Underland (kinda obvious name). They learn of the Prophecy of Gray, and has to go on a quest to save their dad, who disappeared from their apartment two years ago and apparently fell through the same air duct as Gregor and Boots and has been imprisoned by the rats.

"A bold, brave, powerful warrior that the Underlanders would tell stories about for centuries. He could almost see himself leading a squadron of bats into battle, stunning the rats, saving the Underland from--
'Ge-go, I pee!' announced Boots.
And there he stood, a boy in a goofy hard hat with a beat-up flashlight and a bunch of batteries he hadn't even tested to see if they had juice.
The mighty warrior excused himself and changed a diaper." Chapter 12 Pages 137-138
