I know next to nothing about the literary world and didn't need to to completely enjoy this read. Wonderful writing, interesting characters (underline characters), individual voices, a relaxed pace, thought-inducing moments, and a farcical/funny plot that held together. Enjoy.

I love to read about the inner workings of the publishing industry. Martha Grimes pulls together a fast-paced plot with tightly-drawn characters as memorable as those in her Richard Jury series. This is informative as well as entertaining. Worth the reading time.

This is not a Richard Jury mystery but it contains many of the familiar vagaries of characterization and style taken here to an even further degree of satire and farce. Set in New York with a brief detour to Pittsburgh, the plot involves a plan to eliminate one of publishing house Mackenzie-Haack’s award-winning authors in favour of a hot new suspense novelist. Grimes is clearly having fun ridiculing her chosen victims – unscrupulous publishers, greedy agents and untalented egotistical writers. If you are at all familiar with the literary scene, enjoy quirky plots and have a dry sense of humour, you will thoroughly enjoy this book!

One of the funniest books I have read in a long time; I laughed out loud. Anyone connected with the book trade is sure to enjoy Grimes portrayal of writers, publishers and hit men.
