Toytown looks like any other neighborhood toy store, with stuffed animals, wooden sailors, favorite games, and beautiful dolls on all the shelves. But it's also the place an adorable guinea pig named Little Whistle calls home. And at night in Toytown, when the shades are drawn and Little Whistle is awake, magical things happen. . . .
The first of Little Whistle's delightful nighttime adventures, this sure-to-be-classic from beloved author Cynthia Rylant will make Toytown a place every young reader will want to visit.

I am new to this series by Cynthia Rylant. The little guinea pig is a perfect choice for this book and many children may know one personally. The book "gives a nod" to The Velveteen Rabbit, and the Toy Story movie as the toys come alive at night, but the book far outdistances these with its realistically painted illustrations by Tim Bowers. I can smell the blocks and feel their carvings and textured surfaces, the smooth and hard surface of the marbles, and the soft, nubby texture of the stuffed animals' felted wool. I plan to enjoy the rest of the "Little Whistle" series, and I deeply hope that the rest of these books are also illustrated by Tim Bowers.
