Fifth novel in Clavell's "Asian Saga" series
I've read all the James Clavell books. If your interested in this book because you loved shogun or whirlwind like I did prepare to be disappointed. This is most boring book I've ever read and it just keeps going and going. Initially I thought it would be like whirlwind slow to start but then a fantastically good read, nope stays very slow and monotonous.
Clavell's epic follow-on to Tai-pan, and the truly definitive story of modern day Hong Kong. It truly grasp's what Hong Kong was all about prior to 1997 and the British handover to the Republic of China. While much has already changed since 1997, it is a fascinating tale of intrigue, deceit, business dealing, romance and history. All back-dropped by the incredibly colorful Colony of Hong Kong. If anything this book is just too long, almost 1300 pages, and would have been better and simpler if all the Russian complicated spying sub-plot had been omitted as was done for the 1988 TV mini-series. For this reason I only gave it 3 stars. The TV mini-series followed the book very closely except for the main characters Roger Crosse and Casey Tcholok. Well worth the read, but be patient. It took me 5 weeks to get through it. The mini-series was excellent too, omitted much of the sub-plots, and closely maintained the essence of the book, and Hong Kong.
This is part of Clavell's Asian saga. Several of these titles are tied by forefathers from the previous stories.
This is a more contemporary tale set in Hong Kong. Lots of suspense, intrigue, spies, romance.....an epic tale.
Highly recommended, but read Sho-gun and Tai-Pan first.
Dang, this was a great read! I've just finished reading the entire "series". Too bad Clavell's dead... there's so much more story to tell. Someone needs to climb in Clavell's shoes and walk a few more miles. There's gotta be at least one thousand page novel devoted to "Hag" Struan! And how about more on Japan!?
WARNING: Do NOT, I repeat: NOT, watch the TV mini-series based on this book!!!
The continuing story of the Struans .. this time the Grandson of the original Tai Pan --
Set over a very short time span, very fast paced, a lot going on, and so easy to read ... oh, there's an intriguing love story that is for the ages.
Interesting ending -- didn't see it coming.
Good read, but not the best in the saga.
