It is 1870. In North Texas, there have been three years of peace between the U. S. Army and the Comanche, led by Quanah Parker. The architect of this peace is General Tracy Cameron, commander at Fort Elliot, whose speech in Washington, D.C. prompted a Congressional mission to the west to investigate allowing the Comanche to remain on their native lands in peace. But General William Sherman would rather attack, and Quanah Parker is organizing the wild Kiowa and Cheyenne to help him drive the dreaded white buffalo hunters away from the last great herd on the plains.
