Investigating police brutality leads Cajun police detective Dave Robicheaux and his partner Helen Soileau on a trail that goes back to the 40-year-old murder of labor organizer Jack Flynn. As the mystery deepens, New Orleans Mafia and shadowy figures from the Chinese Triads surface, and Burke brings to life a world of racial violence, class warfare, and abusive power of the privileged in a wrenching tale of historical violence and soiled redemption.

Another wonderful book by James Lee Burke. The cast of characters and their actions are quite grim. Even so, Burke's writing is so lovely that I would often stop to reread a segment. In this book, there is less angst about Vietnam, though Robicheaux remains embedded in his painful history. He reminds me of Reacher with his pursuit of true north. But Reacher is touched by wanderlust while Robicheaux is anchored to Louisiana.

As good as any of the other novels in the Robicheaux series. That being said, I find the violence of the two main characters increasingly disturbing, not to mention the very thin veneer of southern civility that masks ongoing racial and socio-economic problems in Louisiana. If the novels are accurate in this regard, then I am glad I am living here in Canada.
