When Conrad Morrisey loses his beloved wife, Rose, after fifty years of marriage, his grief is overwhelming. He spends his days in retreat from the people in their small New Hampshire village, reflecting on his life with Rose and his homing pigeons -- a hobby he shared with his father-in-law and mentor, Lemuel. Through Conrad's memories, we come to know and like Rose and to understand why her husband loved her so dearly. During one of his darkest hours, in the middle of a raging thunderstorm, he runs outside into Rose's garden, now in disarray from neglect. There he sees an angel who vaguely resembles Lemuel, and conveys to Conrad that Rose loves him, but life must go on. Conrad is deeply moved by the experience and begins to tend Rose's garden and to reach out to people much in the way that Rose did, rediscovering his great appetite for life and the extraordinary beauty in the world.
