Joanne McMullen's fears for her sister's sanity have brought her to remote King's Island, Maine. Mary's grief over the loss of her child is threatening to send her over the edge-and her insistence that she has heard an eerie, childlike wailing in the woods fuels Joanne's anxiety. And now Mary's taken to disappearing at midnight in search of the source of the heartrending moans. But it's not just her sister's encroaching madness that is chilling Joanne's blood-it's her own. Because suddenly, impossibly, she also hears the crying child.

Excellent book by one of my favorite authors- a young woman visits her sister and her rich husband on an island in Maine. It's a big beautiful old house from the whaling days. But the trouble is that the place seems to be haunted by a crying child. Her sister believes it's the child she miscarried and everyone thinks she's crazy. A local doctor gets involved and is interested in the girl romantically but there are problems with that. They all work on solving the mystery. It has it's tense and scary moments. I love the book. I've read it several times.
