Even with racial prejudice throughout the book, it seemed oddly devoid of any emotion. I really didn't see any relationship (except symbolically) between the boy and the dog. I really did not care for this book.

This could have been a true life experience and not just for an African-American family. I love anything to do with Black History even fiction. I can see people living this same way. But what a way to grow up for a young black boy surviving with his dog as his best friend.
