This Stegner book is the prequel to "All the Little Live Things", and introduces Joe Allston, thought to represent the writer. The book deals with aging, reflection, choices and regrets. Stegner is great with character development, and explores the relationship of Joe and his wife and the lives they have shared (and another relationship that was left unexplored).
This is descriptive, character-driven fiction.
