Great story.

This is storytelling of the first order, a plot with many imaginative twists and turns. The author's use of language is another compelling feature of the book. You don't achieve this level quickly. Forget about dashing off a novel every…

I agree with some of the other reviewers in that the book was a little slow and frankly, depressing at first. However, it was very good to learn even more about trees. I appreciate the Canadian settings. It was a thinker on what we have…

4 1/2 stars. A friend lent me a copy of this book as she thought I would enjoy it. I have to admit that the beginning of the book was a bit slow for me and then it grabbed me. This book is a multi-generational novel about a family, the…

I don’t give our 5 stars to just any book but this one was special for me. The structure of the book examining a family line as it would the rings of a tree was very interesting. I have a very unusual and somewhat disjointed family so I…

A stand-out read for me. Everett Greenwood will stay in my mind for a long time. Trees figure largely in this book, but I would not describe this as an ecological novel; it is more about the complexities of relationships over time.

The elements of a good story, but there my praise dries up. The post-apocalyptic start and end seemed largely irrelevant, and I found the writing flat, lacking colour. The loose ends introduced in the first few pages took 500 pages…

Has many things to recommend it. It is essentially also pretty heavy-handed a telling of the story. However, better than other Canada Reads recommendations. They should have short-listed the Jenna Butler book.

Ecological information in readable form. You learn about the trees, the characters, and the great sweep of American/Canadian history in such a way that you are part of the journey through their lives - both human and plant. A ten out of…

Excellent novel. It lingered on in my imagination for weeks after reading it.

This is a GREAT novel!!! Following a family through generations and the equivalent rings of the tree. From 2038 to 1908 and back out again to 2038. Although very large at 490 pages, I couldn't put it down.

We are dust, and to dust we shall return. 100 years after the Great Depression and Dust Bowl of the 1930's, dust is once again sickening and killing people due to the "Great Withering" which has destroyed the forests and altered the…

Absorbing novel that successfully merges form and content to bring us a modern take on an old-fashioned tale of high adventure. The novel follows four generations of the Greenwood family, pioneers in a hugely successful logging business,…

Very interesting style and a compelling story. It’s a bit of a commitment to get through but well worth it. Of course, living in North Vancouver we are surrounded by trees and this book is a good reminder of how we are all connected.

I loved this book! Both my husband and I powered through this novel in record time. I loved that it was set in Canada with many parts taking place in Southwestern BC. The mythical, almost enchanted "Greenwood" feels like a place I've…

I don't often find that "award winners" are my favourite books. In fact, many times don't even finish an award-winner. Greenwood is an exception because it's an exceptional book. Want a good STORY? Believable, interesting characters? …

Absolutely loved this amazing book. A timely, beautiful book based on complex characters and their love of trees. One of the best books out there.

It’s a rare book that can spur action, but I’m now looking into how I can help to preserve old growth forests. This book takes the reader from the lumber barron days to a dystopian future where the trees have largely disappeared due to…

Time, by its very nature inherently haunting, infuses Greenwood. Deftly, epically Christie shuttles the reader to and fro navigating a 130-year time span. Along the way the spatial geography traversed is expansionary, yet focused. …

This is a beautifully written, immersive, generational saga that was a joy to read. Highly recommended.

A lovely and heart-wrenching family saga that begins in a future beset by a changing climate and travels back to the earlier days of the 1930's lumber industry. I found all of the characters compelling, and the way he wove the threads of…
