I was sad that the content of the film was, well, bland. The timing was off. The action starts LATE in the film. It has a resolution to the problem that is, in my opinion, nonsense. Only in an idealistic world would this happen.
Rotten Tomatoes panned the film that "Hunter Killer cruises the murky action depths, following a perfunctory course into territory that's been charted many times before." I have seen a couple of Submarine war films before but this one has two exciting vectors, the sub and the seals. Also, the decisions made by the sub's captain, Gerard Butler, are extreme cliffhangers. Excellent production sets, big naval battle scenes and very entertaining despite of the complexity of the plot and a large number of actors. The audience will find some characters to cheer for.
Forget the critics as they take the movie too seriously. This is a great popcorn movie...action, well-paced and entertaining.
I really enjoyed this movie. I don't usually go for submarine movies but was impressed with this one.
This was a really over-the-top fun action movie. Mikhail Gorevoy portrayed a caricature of real villain and commands a presence on the screen that is also feels a bit of a joke at the same time. Had two different story threads with the Submarine and the ground troops whose mission changed dramatically. It's just a fun crazy movie that has a dark comedy aspect to it that looks like it is poking fun at the American and Russian military.
Found it slightly entertaining with a lot of parts that seem to drag on. The one part of the movie that I actually thought was done good was at the end when the American and the Russian shook hands. They did not salute each other. I found this to have a really deep meaning.
This is a very entertaining movie. I am amazed at all the work and talent it must take to get just about everything right. Some of the reviews say "don't watch this -- Red October Is better." Well, duh, we've all seen Red October and the other sub movies. So don't consider the naysayers. Just sit back for a couple of hours and enjoy a great action flic.
I found this movie pretty tense and gripping. I thought it was a good movie and story.
One of the best action movies that you've not heard of! Lots of plot twists. A couple of casting mistakes and it would be 4 stars plus. Old man and Common not best choices for being Generals!
This should have been a very good movie; something more than an "action flick." But it's not. Blame the script. Blame the director.
However, VISUALLY the movie is a winner. That enough for you? Credit the special effects crew at Toronto's SPINVFX. Terrific work, on all the major scenes. There's very little that's actually real in this movie--except the especially-constructed submarine interior and the Pentagon's communications room with its wall-of-screens displaying what the commandos (or black ops or whatever they're called) are transmitting from the (computer generated) Russian naval base.
There are easily a dozen moments test any movie-goers "suspension of disbelief" to the max, including the outrageous over-acting of two two players--the young guy who plays the submarine's XO (who would have been sent to the brig within seconds of his first rant at the captain) and the second is over-the-top Gary Oldman as some senior "Go to Defcon 1!!" military muckamuck. Hope the money was good, Gar.
If you like movies the are predictable and boring this is the movie for.....what a crapfest
If you're tempted to watch Hunter Killer because it's a sub movie, do yourself a favor and watch any of these far better sub movies instead:
Crimson Tide, The Hunt for Red October, Das Boot, Black Sea, Phantom, U571, K19: The Widowmaker, Submerged, 20,000 Leagues under the Sea, and even Down Periscope.
And if you still haven't gotten enough underwater stuff after that, check out The Abyss, Pioneer, and Pressure.
I loved this action film. Gerard Butler is very good, Gary Oldman, on the other hand, seems out of place. (Oldman plays a smaller role, so he isn't the foremost personality on the screen.) A modern submarine story, with sub-plots that intertwine throughout the script. I liked the story line; it was very clean. The sound in the first 20 mins. could have had a better mix. However, just a small thing in the beginning for me. A war scenario with a lot of action and intense drama. Very enjoyable.
Once you suspend your disbelief at how American derring-do and technology help to penetrate a high security Russian zone, you'll find this movie is full of action, suspense, and makes for a thoroughly enjoyable watch.
Preposterous. Gary Oldman is ridiculous. Lapses in military discipline are distracting.
Eye candy nonsense.
Gerard Butler routinely makes these silly action movies , but how on earth did they get Gary Oldman to take part in this formula action crap. (A couple of tons of money????)
The usual BS the American special squad hit everything they shot at,the Russian special forces can't hit the side of a barn.
If you want to see a good submarine movie there are a lot of older better films such as:
Run Silent Run Deep; Crimson Tide and Hunt For Red October.
Decent action film based on a submarine story. A Russian sub torpedoes an American submarine while the Russian President is facing a coup by a Russian General. A U.S. sub working with a ground SEAL unit is tasked to retrieve the Russian President. So there is action underwater, above ground and in the political arena. Gets a bit confusing, but it all plays out. Was trying to think of the last submarine movie I saw; it was probably Hunt for the Red October. I cannot imagine working on a submarine (being bit claustrophobic) and of course, near the end the sub starts taking on water. So this DVD has the threat of doing your daily job on the sub, the threat of international conflict and the threat of WWIII all crammed into 2 hours.
I grew up on a steady diet of B-roll movies and black and white late night sci-fi, so I may have more patience with this movie than some others. There were some scenes that looked as if they were actually shot in a sub, there were some great shots of ships and boats in the harbor, and the story line is a classic. Some of the dialogue was really badly written and almost as badly delivered. A couple hard to swallow scene, like a midshipman yells at his commander and doesn't even gt a reprimand, and the Russian captain willing turns his back on Mother Russia. Still, it was a fun movie.
I was hoping for a lot more from this movie considering the cast. When they actually focus on the submarine crew, there are some really good moments but because they keep cutting back to multiple subplots in play it all becomes very muddled with little to direction. It was not a bad experience but it was also not good. I would recommend skipping this one.
Well done intriguing Sub movie. Exciting and well worth our time to watch it.
